Self-congratulatory edicts spit from gold-plated mouths that will never understand what it means to miss a meal. Don't tell me what I need until you've needed anything. Private-school anarchists with bought trains of thought, donned in T-shirts screaming slogans of wars never fought. And I'm supposed to hide my change? For who and for what? To appease the piss-ants pretending their haves are have-nots? I know what you came out here for.”

WE ON SOME NEXT LEVEL SHIT

As Friends Rust

Hardcore/Punk conceived itself as a reaction against the constants of mainstream culture. It attacks the insensitivity, escapism, consumerism and apathy, which is more than quite often, reflected, concretized and nurtured by it through mainstream culture’s existence. The question now is: why does the “scene” find itself in a state of DENIAL as it contradicts its attempts as an alternative? Examples are followed:

DENIAL. Hardcore zines criticize bands growing beyond their niche amidst cries of SELL OUT!!! And yet they claim that the message of hardcore/punk is important to go around in order to spread “alternative” information and be a threat. Sorry, Hardcore for the Hardcore only.

DENIAL. The kids won’t listen to music on “big” though still independent labels and yet play their CDs on the best sound system equipment made by multinational corporations who slowly kill people in the third world through wage-slave labor. Not to forget their affinity for “hardcore” sporty gear, somehow ignoring the fact that these fashions came out of the blood of sweatshops. Your favorite straightedge youthcrew combo goes paging Nike for endorsement. Everybody wants to be the Tiger Woods or XMikeX Jordan of hardcore.

DENIAL. Everybody criticizes consumerism, yet fall victim to the hunt for that elusive, rare, out of print green 7” of some obscure “legendary” band in auctions that jack up the price a hundred fold? Uh sir, could you call that collectivist materialism?

DENIAL. Kids say that “hardcore” is all about respect and yet do not have the sensitivity to put their words into practice when it’s time to pick up the chicks at the show. Is respect earned as one acquires the chicks and kicks other kids’ butts at the pit? Ohhh,.. Let me touch those muscles, boy.

DENIAL. Kids say that hardcore/punk is all about lyrics, ideas and content, but somehow the ideas gets lost when the time comes for everybody to engage in some ritualistic kickboxing moves on the dance floor, all to the tune of the indecipherable screaming of some person on the mic. “I can’t play soft music because that’s a sell out and its up to the kids to find out what I’m saying.” “Bleaaaurrghh!!!!” Translation: Revolution!!!!

DENIAL. Calls for unity can be heard left and right; but when it comes to practice, in-scene bickering, lack of self-criticism, and backstabbing are seemingly inherent characteristics of the scene. “Yes kids, I know more about anarchy than you do.”

Since the early 80’s, as socio-politically tinged bands took the stage and D.I.Y. started to take form, Punk/Hardcore by some means took up the ideals of changing the world through a cultural movement of sorts (though this idea might be a source of debate). Though there are some substantial changes that have occurred in the “maturing/growing” scene through years, it seems obvious that the scene rarely acted on socio-political matters as an “organized” movement (at least in the Philippine experience), even though there may be a significant number of punk writings on this matter. As I have observed, political concerns were only taken up on the individual level, as manifested in the few independent punk thinkers and a handful of punk activists.

Some may claim that being punk itself and protesting in silence is the form of dissent they are taking as a reaction to mainstream zombiefication culture. The question/reaction to this position is: “Is it enough to effect social change simply by being hardcore/punk or D.I.Y.?” Even now that D.I.Y. has noticeably becoming an ambiguous term, as compromises are taken into consideration, whenever issues of economic growth and actual engagement comes into mind.

Also amidst the aforementioned denial/inconsistencies that I have enumerated above, the paradigm is now under question. The practice of professed ideas would seem to be inversely proportional if seen under objectivity.

Does the kind of social change that the scene aspires to effect occur simply because the kids listen to Youth of Today, Catharsis, Discharge, Code 13, Los Crudos, or even Earth Crisis? Is it enough that the kids read and memorize every word that is written in HeartattaCk, Inside Front, MRR and Punk Planet? What are music, lyrics and printed words if not put into consistent and contextualized actions? They are nothing but just that.

Ideas from lyrics and reading materials are things that may be the starting point of something, but it is not the end all of punk/hardcore culture. The kids can arm themselves with the ideas from such sources, analyze their applicability in the local context, put them into action as personal/individual choices, and then educate/organize others to effect a movement. Only as an organized whole can we substantiate the change we want to make.

One has to understand that punk/hardcore youth culture is a means for empowerment; it has long escaped from the confines of just being music to rock out to. Punk adheres to D.I.Y. ethic to show that independence is empowerment. It is in the wielders’ hands to realize that they have the power to effect change, but are we prepared to take up on that challenge? The question still remains.

I found this on my old hard drive and I guess this is still worth sharing. Fighting For Our Lives - An Anarchist Primer is a pamphlet published by Crimethinc for free.

This free paper discusses, in simple language, what is anarchist in everyday life, and how those spheres of cooperation can be expanded. It addresses common questions that often deter people from exploring anarchist ideas and approaches, and endeavors to help introduce new terms and possibilities into the public consciousness—as well as to celebrate the times when we’ve realized those possibilities, for those who have been consciously participating in the anarchist project for years or decades already.

Mass-produced material like this is no substitute for individual expression, decentralized activity, or cultivating community, but it can be used to initiate and encourage those beautiful things. We’re not trying to speak for everyone, but to make it clear that everyone can speak; we’re not trying to define anarchy for everyone, but to undermine misunderstandings so everyone can begin that conversation afresh.

To make this experiment work, of course, we need your participation. Please do order a bundle of these for your town, and put copies at every record store, farmers’ market, bookshop, and high school! Take them on tour with your band, and leave them at gas stations as well as punkhouses; put them out in the employee restroom, or at art openings, or in public parks. We can pull out all the stops in spreading this paper—it deals with universal themes, the tone and aesthetic are not subculture-specific, and heaven knows there are enough of them.

The fact that we’ve been able to build up such an extensive and effective network for the free circulation of material like this is itself a testament to how well anarchy works, even in times of capitalist occupation. With this project, we hope to help expand that network, and the recognition of its value, a little deeper into surrounding society.

As always—especially since over the past year we’ve almost ceased releasing new commodities that make profit, in order to focus on free and break-even material—we rely on donations, benefit shows, and other kinds of assistance from you to make this possible, so do help out as much as you’re able.

Never Forget The Cause is a punk rock/electronic/indie music collective from Quezon City in the Philippines that advances the DIY ethos of the early anarcho-punk movement.

Their recordings serve as a musical manifesto to a movement that believes that music need not be boxed as a commodity that can be sold, because we believe that no one has a natural right to make a claim of ownership to an idea, as all minds are free and so are the ideas that flourish from them.

We question the status quo of those who seek to put an iron hold on the music industry, by launching a crusade that is geared up on advancing corporate 'pop' music by subverting the underground music scene's aesthetics in order to create a more media savvy and blander version of such underground forms of music.

The band also is an advocate, the Open Source approach to design, development, and distribution of music.

Also they adhere to the free culture movement that promotes the freedom to distribute and modify creative works, using the Internet as well as other media.

They object to overly restrictive copyright laws, and intellectual property. Instead we promote the Creative Commons and Copyleft forms of licensing.

They seek to liberate the airwaves, from bland pop music as well as to confront the corporate music industry's spectacle of hype at its own irrelevance.

Ideas are free and so is music.

Something To Read: Coffeemug Back Issues

Coffeemug is an annual zine based in San Pablo, this is a collaboration effort of our friends Jade Fandino and Mark Nino Cordova also from the RadioOff Project which based in Bauan Batangas. Thanks to Nino for sharing the link to us. I was able to grab a copy of this zines when it was released.

If you don't know zines plays an important role in our hardcore punk community, this is where you can find punk literature. Zines can also help you in educating yourself about the movement, the culture and d.i.y ethics. So if you see any zine on the merch table at your local d.i.y gigs make sure to grab one, its rare now. So create some demand for the paper zine and support your local zine writers and publications.

Coffeemug will be releasing their 10th issue probably before the year ends or early next year, so watch out for that. Also, we are planning to put some articles on print before this year end, we will be needing your support.

Across The Sea No. 7: Archaic Smile

From the ashes of a year’s hiatus, melodic hardcore band, Archaic Smile is now back with a new line-up and a drive to make the Bristol hardcore outfit be deservingly heard. They have played alongside mighty bands such as It Prevails and All Guns Blazing from their past experiences, thus, proving their worth.

Archaic Smiles’ new 2-track EP album, “This City”, has a personality of sticking to their English roots. The first track, same name of the EP, opens up fervent screaming vocals thorough followed by spoken sung that gives the listener a surprise of that strong rhotic Bristolian English accent. The second track, “Ocean Related Trauma”, pops a melody that is much present in modern hardcore but is well crafted ending with fading screams to present the feel of darkness through a lyrically “dark” track.

Archaic Smile gives me a hint of sublime young hardcore horde with the fanatical screaming vocals mixing a twist of their inhabitant accent, and old-fashioned melodic guitar works that works with a more contemporary hardcore drum beats. Modern melodic hardcore bands are notable for their triplets and tapping guitar and bass, but this EP’s work is pretty old school having to use more authentic standard straight distorted guitar riffs. And this however amazingly bonds together with a more modern double pedalled drum work. This is a good paradigm where the old and new collide to pull off a great incorporating jar of complex techniques to vanguard the well-constructed album. This is the thing I like about this album overall. For a comeback, Archaic Smile simply bears out their musically-driven merit.

Aya Skate Park

First, congratulations to Aya Skate Park. Finally a real skate park at the heart of Batangas.

I was really stoked when I heard that there is a skate park being built at the town San Jose in Batangas. It is the country's first dedicated concrete skate park. Though the park is only on its first stage, it is now open to the public and to our skaters. Entrance fee is only 50 bucks, very affordable to any visitor.

Haven't been to the park yet, but the pictures from their website is promising. Local and nearby province skaters, bmx riders and inline skaters will benefit a lot from this park in enhancing their skills. Our skaters can have the luxury to enjoy riding without being harassed by security guards or other people. The park is also accessible and its like an hour drive from Manila via SLEX and Star Tollway.

According to their website, the park is on its Stage - 1 and have corner concrete quarter-pipe, a friendly 5-meter-long stair/ramp hand rail, wooden half-pipe, grinding rails, fun box/ wedge ramp, slack-line, and outdoor rappelling. Stage 2 of the project will feature bowls, 3-step, 4-step, snake line, ledges and other street elements.

There is also a camping ground if you want to spend the night at the park and enjoy the beauty of nature.

I just hope we can also set some local D.I.Y gigs on this skate park as well in the future.

The saying: “first come, first served,” is very elementary.

But what is interesting about it is that it speaks about the very tenet of what is supposed to be the normative expression of justice in an avenue where consensus is supposed to be built, it is very similar to a situation when you fall in line to avail of something. Where of course it is only fair for those who are at the front of the line to be accommodated first since they did made an effort to be on time or at least to qualify them as deserving of the commodified service because they came first from the others.

Now it would be a different story if someone is to cut corners.

If the interest of justice is supposed to be fairness. Then those who choose to cut corners should be reprimanded, while those who are in the line that have been deprived of what they ought to be getting at the right time since they’re on queue should at the very least be rendered an apology.

I am not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

But a plain and simple pursuance of what the organizers of the gig upholds: Justice.

Corruption is contempt of justice. Cutting corners in a line-up is about creating shortcuts that deprive what is due and what is just for those in the schedule, hence a contempt of justice.

What is tragic is that a gig that seeks to uphold justice by raising awareness about the direness of the need to take a stand against corruption has rendered itself unable to uphold what is fair.

Some bands chose to cut corners. We came at the appointed time. We communicated since last week to the person responsible for the line-up. We constantly talked to the person on site who was suddenly taking care of the line up on paper. The paper said we were supposed to be on-stage after Walk Me Home. But to our surprise another band came and then another so I asked that person in-charge why I asked for a meeting and in the meeting I asked that person to put on paper the line-up, I thought we were supposed to keep what’s on paper as a set in stone rule.

But lo and behold once it’s our time to get up the stage another band by the name of Radiustar is already up there claiming that it’s their time. I asked the person in charge to come up to the stage to sort it out I asked for the paper. What’s on paper is that we’re supposed to be the ones to play. Honestly, I don’t care who cut corners be it Diktador, Monochrome or Radiustar

But what’s the response we got?

The person holding the line up on paper said: “pwede ba sila nalang muna next nalang kayo…”

The paper says it’s supposed to be DeathToPuberty, but the band setting up on stage says otherwise. The person holding the line-up says otherwise.

What is that all about?

It’s disappointing that they didn’t even bother to reprimand those who chose to cut corners.

It’s ironic that justice at such a low-level can’t even be pursued, especially from an organization that seeks to battle one of the greatest injustices in the Philippines: corruption.

If that’s not unfair.

Then I don’t know what it is….

DEAD (Australian Sludge Dou)

DEAD is Jace Rogers on bass and vocals and Jem Maloney on drums. This dou is from Melbourne, Australia playing sludge kind of metal and they went to Manila for a couple of gigs. I was able to catch them perform together with Caitlyn Bailey, Monochrome, Onion, Legarda and Wilederness at YADU Store at The Collective in the city Makati.

Jem and Jace are DEAD. They are awesome. Most bands are awful but not DEAD, they’re awesome. It’s spelled in capitals ‘cos there are only four letters and you have to make them count.

There are 8,000,000 bands in the world and if you managed to discover this one in that great big pile of mediocrity you have done very well for yourself. Read on to discover just how well.

Most people don’t “get” DEAD, but then most people are idiots. Actually, most people would not even have a clue who DEAD are. But even if they did, they would not “get it.” What a bunch of losers man! They are missing out.

Jem and Jace both also play together in Fangs of… who are even less popular than DEAD. Jem is also in Fire Witch and Inappropriate Tough Guy Behaviour who have cred in some circles. But it’s too early to tell if any of that cred will carry over. It’s a funny old business.

In September 2010 DEAD was born. There is a dad joke somewhere in that statement, feel free to make it. Even though they have a lot of other bands and things to do Jem and Jace wanted to play more music. So they wrote some songs, booked a tour for Nov/Dec, played a heap of shows, recorded an album and started booking tours of SE Asia and USA.

It’s 2011 and you don’t need to be told what the band sound like. The internet can tell you that. You don’t even have to buy the record when it comes out. You can just download it and say that you own it. The important thing is that they look incredible.

DEAD make their own merch and run their own label (WeEmptyRooms). You can get specially made DEAD T-shirts, hoodies, patches, tea towels, undies, pillow cases and even more. Because you’re not a real punk band unless you got stuff to sell with your name on it.

And DEAD are TOTALLY a punk band!

DEAD will never be popular. No one is losing sleep over this and if they are, they are idiots. DEAD won’t stop ‘cos being in DEAD is too much fun. Go and see them live or buy a record if you yearn for a life changing experience.

Hey, check this out guys. I’ve got a music video production on the set. Chilidogs had me to direct a music video that compiles their live performances, photos and footages that evinces the never-ending scene of Philippines’ fronting crises.

Chilidogs is a band from the San Pablo City, Laguna formed in 1994 and played African-American progressive, punk and hardcore. Twelve years passed, they're back with a new lineup, thus depicting for their 2010 EP album "New Breed". Their vocalist, Noevic Liwanag is a resident of Lipa, Batangas.

So, keep on track and be updated for the full length music video to be released public this fall of May 2011. Thank you.

DoneFor is a melodic hardcore band from Brisbane Australia and they have a four track demo available for free download. This is indeed a great demo from this young band from Brisbane, reminiscent to the music of bands like Defeater and Ruiner. The songs are flying high on emotion matched with good lyrics and sincerity. I have nothing but praise on this demo. So if you are a fan of bands I mentioned earlier, I am sure your going to like this one. Download this demo and you won't be disappointed.

Oponente Interno is a band from Ecuador in South America and they have a Digital EP called Voces Y Gritos that was released last year and this is available for free download. I always appreciate those bands who share their music for free, I strongly believed that music should be free specially if its on a digital format.

Opening track Voces Y Gritos or Shouts and Cries in English is heavy, infused with some metal influence. This track sounds more like Earth Crisis and As I Lay Dying. Great guitar works and heavy pounding drums, high on energy, enough to start a moshpit and some sing along. On Activa Voluntad, the band tries to be melodic opening the song with bass line with complex guitar riffs reminds of melodic hardcore bands of the late 90's and early 2000. I just wish they include lyrics with translations or explanation since the songs were written in Spanish.

For me hardcore is not just about music, it is always important to have the lyrics sheet as well. I want to know the reason why are you screaming.

Best things come out in a box of coagulated new musical experiments. Love American is a post-hardcore/screamo band that hails from the valleys of Southern California. Their music reminds me of music tempos of old school Jawbox thrown to the mixture of post-hardcore which then meets Converge meets Pianos Become the Teeth with the frayed keen vocals.

Love American’s self-titled EP proves the clarity of ardent, passionate vocals, the notable powerful guitar dynamics and fluid song writing. Their opening song, Where’s My Cash, Johnny, displays the spectacular consistency of remorseless, ragged and roaring vocals of Javier Ramirez, which will be more relentless and powerful as you go along the album. “Then/Than”, Ramirez sung to a cease to share vocals with Natalie Diaz of Modern American Theatre, pops a little surprise of female vocals added on track. More prominent in album are the guitar riffs which are indeed genius work.

I myself like this EP because of its eagerness to display a burst of potential and all I can do is to excite myself. My praises for the great vocals and authentic guitar work. The unbound potentiality is worthy of an LP in the band’s years to come. I somehow anticipate one in the future.

Some Old Records For Sharing: Village Idiots "Needles to Say"

I used to have this CD back then, and I can't remember who borrowed or took this from my rack, One of my fave local pop punk band back in the days together with the likes of Richard Collier and Batangas' One Sweet Day and Settle Down. Thanks to Jade of Walk Me Home for sharing this to us.

Here's a little bio from their old Myspace page, probably outdated as well;

Started out doing Descendents and Greenday covers during their high school years around ‘95, Village Idiots became San Pablo’s premier punk band until their breakup last year 2003. Jade (main chief songwriter), RJ (bass), Delfin (guitars) and Alex (drums) spent countless weekend mornings in basement to write their early pop punk songs about school, teenage love and mainly about growing up. Their main influence during that time includes Descendents, Greenday, Goo Goo Dolls, Bad Religion and The Lemonheads. But after graduation from highschool (March ’96), three fourth of the band went separate ways and Jade is the only member left to continue the band. Now Jade’s first move is to find replacements. Luckily, he recruited Ebong from hardcore band Balance on guitars, Topet another highschool mate on bass and Jhay from post-hardcore outfit Thinline on drums. After completing the band line up once again, Village Idiots became much better, tighter and gaining more attention from the local San Pablo scene. And eventually from neighboring towns and cities sharing stages with Strap On Seven Inch, Goo, Mindrape from Manila, Feud, Hollywood from Cavite, Aunt Audrey, S.A.W., On A Day Like Today from Laguna and One Against All, Settled Down from Batangas are among their contemporaries. Year 2001, they released their parent’s produced demo cassette tape entitled “1-800-DIETSODA” which includes early songs like “cram”, “diet soda”, “hotshot”. 2 years later with more budget, they went inside Sound Creation to record their first and only full length cd entitled “Needles To Say” with Shinji Tanaka behind the glass. Before launching “Needles To Say” some of the songs was initially released on “Split Ends”, a cd split with Batangas’ punk friends Settled Down. The band played their final show in their hometown San Pablo City last 2003 in the Earth Decay show against US President Bush. Currently: -Jade is writing for his zine Coffeemug and playing bass for an indie rock band Walk Me Home. Also a proud father. -Ebong is proud father too and taking care of his pregnant wife for their second baby. -Jhay is a proud father too and also plays drums for Walk Me Home. -Topet is pursuing a career as a computer hacker.

The Kingsford Run is a harcore/metal band from Simi Valley in California and they have a demo called MMXI available for free download.

The opening track Clubbing Seals is song is full of energy, for sure to wake you up in a dizzy Monday morning. The second song Arrows continues with the same energy and passion, while Dead Dogs for Quarter is a slower compare to the previous songs but this is my personal favorite. Compliment to the guitar works and vocal parts. This is great demo, I am really stoked when I heard this. Can't wait for their full length to be released.

2nd Installment of This is Not a Punk Show

Second installment of a four week event at Kalye Art Gallery, featuring the local talents that we have on the local punk scene. On this leg there will be a film showing like The Edge, a perspective on a drug free culture and straight edge,Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi), Ray Cappo (Youth of Today, Shelter) and Karl Buechner (Earth Crisis, Freya) give witness to their perception of the history of Straight Edge, why it was so important to them and what it changed in their personal and professional careers. But they also address problems like violence, sexism and intolerance that emerged within Straight Edge, and how it changed the ‘scene’ as well as its public image.

Furthermore, EDGE explores the lives of 9 individuals, that identify as Straight Edge. Their reasons range from negative experiences with drugs to maintaining a healthy lifestyle to political reasons. Through a very close and personal look into their daily lives, we see how their decision to live ‘poison free’ has changed the world for them.

Another film that would be shown is Inside Outside, this is about artists who works on the street. The artist featured on this film face some kind of dilemma with restrictions and norms of the society they live in, the forces fo the commercial art world and the advertising industry who are looking for the next big thing and want to have their bite of the energy and coolness that the street art is brimming with.

On April 5, ANCILLA. ORG will conduct the walk for a cause at Batangas City. This walk for a cause entitled "ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES" is annual event hosted by TOMS Shoes in cooperation with our organization. It might be hot, it'll probably be uncomfortable, and our feet will certainly get dirty, but by doing so, we'll help raise awareness of the impact a simple pair of shoes can bring to a child's life. Your involvement will captivate and educate the province of Batangas, and impact the lives of children around the world. If you could change the lives of children with a simple gesture, would you do for one day what hundreds of poor Batangueño's do everyday?

This April 5, please lead by going barefoot, and help mobilize Batangas City to be a part of ONE DAY WTHOUT SHOES.

PROOF is a hardcore-metal band formed in 2007 in Bucharest,Romania.And they have an EP called "Blood Money" released in 2010 which is heavy and fast, plus an astonishing vocals from George. Reminds me a lot of bands like Hatebreed and First Blood. This guys are already a veteran in the scene, already played and toured with bands like Born From Pain,Death Before Dishonor,Ignite,No Turning Back, Last Hope, Manifestation, Confronto, The Setup, Burn The 8 Track, Bleed Into One, Nine Eleven, Deathdrive and many more.

One thing thats missing though in this free download is the lyrics. As a hardcore fan myself I always look into the lyrics, because we cannot get all those words or message you put into the songs while your singing or screaming, which is important. And that is one reason why we are here as well. Though its a free download I still hope they can include the lyrics in their future downloads. Because we are not looking for some good hardcore music here we are also looking for the message that can enventually change our life in any way.

Hour of the Wolf is a band from Prescott Arizona, already released several EP’s under different labels. Honestly I am not aware of their brand of music, until I was able to listen to this album. Thanks to Jenny Jensen of Think Fast! Records for sending me this material. The first time I listened to Decomposition Vol. 1 it reminds me a lot of old school punk bands like Misfits and Black Flag. I started doing some research about this band and the two bands that I mentioned was their main influence. No wonder they sounded like this. "Decomposition Volume 1" is one half of a complete collection from 'The Wolf and Volume2 will be release sometime this year. Hour of the Wolf also did some covers on this full length like Fix me by Black Flag, Fall of all the American by The Nerve Agents, Breakin’ a memory by Kid Dynamite and I want to be your dog by The Stooges. Alternative Press also described their latest output as a "virtually perfect blend of fever, passion and raucousness". These guys are not pleasing anyone on this record but I am pleased to recommend this release to all of you. So if you like old school punk, you should go and get one.

Snake Road is a hardcore punk band from Philadelphia Pennsylvania and they have a 5 song demo released last year and this is available for free download. With influences like From Autumn to Ashes, Integrity, Tragedy, Victims and Black Sabbath they created this demo sound interesting. On the opening song “Over and Out” this guys proved that they can make good lyrics with fast aggressive music. Save you is a song I personally like on this demo with lines like “Drift into another new episode, you explode” and “Kick me out, pull me back. Fading gray, separate ways.” Liberty to Death is mid tempo with some Metal influence and some guitar solos put to it. On Just Like What We Rehearsed and The Finest Hour they continue the onslaught and aggressiveness in their music. Guitar sound is a little thin though and gang shouts appear to be short at times. But all in all this is a band that is worth checking. You can download this demo for free on the links above.

Austria's Bloodshed Remains will be stopping here for their Batangas leg of the band's Philippine and Southeast Asia Tour. Another great show brought to you by One Voice Asia, NSC, SHURIKENFIST Multimedia Production, GABSDIGIART and 043HARDCOREPUNK.

In 2006 a couple of friends were driven by the will to resurrect the Hardcore scene in Austria. As a first consequence they formed “BLOODSHED REMAINS”, short BsR. Although the scene seemed to die off in Austria they never gave up their hopes and believes in Hardcore.

Belonging to NYHC they developed their own mix of fast parts, powerful grooves and break downs. After a short time they were recognized and supported by a small group of fans. With their outstanding shows and intoxicating HC sound they earn more and more tribute. Not to mention the mosh-, circle-pits and other crazy moves.

Since their beginning they've played along with great bands like MADBALL, AGNOSTIC FRONT, PRO-PAIN, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, H2O, NUEVA ETICA, ALCATRAZ, FIRST BLOOD,….!!

In March 2010 they released their first full-length “What We Live For”. It was spread almost all over the world and they earned a lot of good feedback and respect. Mastered by the all great Tue Madsen and with some guest vocals from Carl (First Blood) and Justin (Alcatraz) they really set a mark in their career.

At the end of June 2010 second guitarist Mani left the band because of a great time and motivation problem. Bloodshed Remains from now on will overcome the world as unbreakable group of four without any losing. " United we bleed " - from their myspace page

Expect a great show for all you hardcore fans out there. It's been a while since we were visited by a foreign band. Last time I guess was Sounthern California's A Better Hope Foundation. This year had been great to us. There are ups and downs but this will not stop us from what we've started. So in this coming year, we are looking for more greater opportunities. The scene is pretty much alive within the past few months. And this January there are more gigs lined up for us punks, hardcore kids, emo kids, indie kids, reggae and ska kids and the typical music fans. This is just the start for this new year. Reignition “The epitome of free will”

Reignition is a band from Pennsylvania and one of hardcore best kept secret. In their two year as a band they released a 7” single called “The epitome of free will” under Think Fast! Records. This record has the influence of early nineties hardcore bands like SNAPCASE, REFUSED and BURN. There’s three tracks on this release, opening with an “Intro” an almost a minute instrument only assault. Next is “Fire breather” which became an instant favorite. This song reminds me of some early post hardcore bands in terms of guitar sound match with spoken words and growls that would be perfect for sing along in every hardcore show. In the song “Sinking” you will clearly hear the 90’s hardcore influence that will make you check your old record collection or your mp3 files and look for old albums of REFUSED or SNAPCASE so you will not lose the momentum when listening to this record. Because this made me want to ask for more from these guys, so for now I will wait for their full length and see if they still have the same intensity and emotion as they have on this release.

Lady I will be playing here in Batangas on December 17,2010 at Alexie Bar. According to Arvi of Tellayouthska she is like the version of Damien Marley of the Philippines. Being the daughter of Reggae Mistress' Chong and Chang.This band started out around 2005, playing their blend of soulful reggae, with hints of dancehall and soul. With members of Reggae Mistress, Skabeche, Badjao Roots, & Salindiwa among others, making up the band, you can be sure to get quality, good Reggae music.

This event also feature some our best ska and reggae bands like Ackees, Color of the day, Crooked beat, Skin46, Cavite's Go for the goat, Tsugalog and Tellayouthska.

Featuring some of hour household bands like Survival of the Fittest, Failure, Chilidogs, 12Tons, and Strength From Within which I think is making a comeback in our local scene. There will be rap battle also for the delight of some fans of rap or hiphop at the event.

Today we will feature another local talent from our hood by the name D. This is not Hardcore or Punk but D is involved in the local scene since the 90's. Also I am no biggie in terms of hiphop or rap music. All I know is I have an open ear that I can listen to any genres available. So let me warn you, this is Rap/Hiphop feature. Open your ears and press play.

D is known for his work at the Civil War mixtape producing beats for some of the country's best Rap Artist like Mike Swift, J-hon, Loonie etc. The Jazz and Reggae samples made an impact to this release, providing us with a laid back beats and is a perfect background for your lazy afternoon with a pipe load or at the beach kind of feeling.

Guest artist feature some of our own rappers like Mike Swift, God's Will and Mel Christ who are making names in the countries local Hip hop scene. Also included on the list is the now famous Loonie, J-hon, D'Franchise, Aero, Cali DRO, A.M.P and Rhythm.

Notable tracks are We are feat. God's Will, Sunday feat. A.M.P, Lola's Song with Aero rapping about the love for his Grandmother I love the sample D used on this one, Rat Race with MelChrist. It's on with J-hon, Mike Swift and Loonie, Natty DRO featuring Cali DRO with some Natty Dread's beats from Bob Marley. Nobenta Sais the bonus track was insane with killer rhymes from Loonie, Mike Swift and J-hon.

One thing lacking on this release would the artist info and some lyric sheets since I always look into the words being put up by this artist. I am not complaining though, since this is free.

This a release that Batagueno's should be proud of. Thanks to my man D for this great beats.

Body pain, neck hurts, sore throat, almost voiceless.. Tired but STRONGER THAN EVER. Indeed, Connecticut hardcore slash metalcore pride, Hatebreed, have destroyed Manila on the night of November 6th, 2010 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.
The event also featured performances of some of the country’s most recognizable hardcore bands in the scene:
• Manila-based thrash metal-hardcore band, Intolerant.
• One of Laguna’s pride and premier hardcore band,Piledriver.
• Baguio City hardcore represent, Bison.
• Cebu City’s hardcore at its finest, Queen City Crew.

Everyone braced themselves as they await the event’s grand finale. It was clear in everyone’s faces the excitement of what they have come for. The damp air of the event hall embraced everyone’s calling. As the lights dim out, everyone cheered and shouted the name. And through that darkness, pierced from behind the stages, the sound of heavy guitar tune started and members of Hatebreed came out all together strong and fierce. And there it was. The insane hardcore/metalcore phenomenon was unleashed with “Everyone Bleed Now” as their starting hit.

The moshers became more aggressive and wilder. Head banging, pogo and hardcore dancing, mosh pits, circle pits, meat grinders, crowd surfing, you name it, everything was happening. But the hospitality of adoring fans was there though they are strangers to each other. Everybody would immediately help out those who have fallen back to their feet to prevent them from being trampled on. Hardcore fans expressed their passion and love for the music through these traditions.

Hatebreed played a series of songs. Hits like, “Merciless Tide”, “Everlasting Scar”, Defeatist”, and “Before Dishonor”. One of the favourites, “Never Let It Die” was played after front man, Jamey Jasta, silenced a moment to dedicate the song to all their fans whom they call ‘brothers and sisters’ that stayed with them through thick and thin, applauding them through the years and keeping the hardcore scene alive. Fans embraced his words and cheered. And more crowd favourites was played then on, such as “In Ashes They Shall Reap”, “Live for This”, “Proven”, and a Slayer cover, “Ghost of War”.

Another moment to be remembered was Jamey explaining how they have come so far away from home but they have never expected it would this insanely awesome performing in front of Filipino fans. The audience started clapping, cheering, and all together shouted, “HATEBREED! HATEBREED! HATEBREED!,” over and over again. Jamey became speechless and was overwhelmed with the crowd’s powerful response. He then continued with how grateful they are and how they would love to come back in the Philippines and perform again.

Hatebreed signals their last song performance, “Destroy Everything.” And the crowd shouted the song title over and over again. As Jamey yelled the first words, “A new life begins!”, the event hall was in an uproar. And he tells the audience that he wants all their fans to sing-along with them loud enough and lose their voices for the night. He then rounds his forefinger to the left. Then, he rounds his forefinger to the center. And finally, to the right, indicating the crowd to get more aggressive and wilder than ever in the mosh pits. As the song plays on, the crowd cheered, the moshers moshed even harder and the circle pits started to round more faster and faster.

Hatebreed have ‘destroyed’ the evening with their last performance. The band thanked the audience. They threw guitar picks and drum sticks to the crowd. Jamey threw out his cap. They applauded. And it was finished. The lights went out. The band was waving as they went back stage. The audience shouted “HATEBREED!” once again, over and over again. But the show was indeed over. As the main lights went on, the shouting stops and everybody started to leave the hall with faces portraying fulfilment and triumph.

It was an experience never to forget coming this far from Batangas. As I was riding the bus on my way back to Batangas, I was staring at the outskirts and sceneries outside the window. And I just smiled then I told myself, “Now, I have a great story to tell.” :)

Phat G. From Hardcore to Rap and The Story Behind That

I know many of you will question or wonder why we feature an artist whose into Rap and HipHop where on the header it says Hardcore Punk. Well I've read a letter written to a Zine before asking if rap or hip hop have a room in our Hardcore Punk scene. I know there will be a lot of discussion for this matter and I leave you guys to that. Honestly, I am no fan of hip hop or rap music, but the thing is, it is interesting to find out some local rap artist that came from the hardcore punk scene. I know its been done by Freddie Madball and some of the NYHC guys. So for this article we will feature Phat G. a guitarist of a hardcore/metal band FAILURE (which is in hiatus) who have released a four way split CD with bands like End is Forever from Germany, John Doe from Poland, and Loyal to the Grave from Japan under Village Kids Record from Germany. Phat G. talks about how he switch from being a guitarist to being an MC and the movement behind NSC (Ninja Shaolin Crew).

First of all, kindly introduce yourself to our readers. And tell us more about you and your project.

Yi yeah.. First of all salamat ENZO at sa site.... Yo! I’m PHAT G hardcore christian warrior, living in bay city area “a City of dreams and a City of Hopes.” I’m just an ordinary guy that can fly up high for our movement since day1 batangas stand up... Filipino rise up... Under Shuriken Multi Media Production... NSC Familia... Anjan jan lng din ako sa kalye...

Some of us know that you are the original guitarist of the hardcore band FAILURE. What happen? Why did leave the band? Whats the story behind that?

Yeah... On the li-low muna kami sa eksena.. But still keep our fire burnin... Buo padin ang banda.. Pero sa ngayon steady lang kami... hintay lang Kiko(bassist) umuwi dhil nasa Singapore pa sya... Para makatugtog ulit... But still we are all ok... Waiting for our right time ulit na makatugtog na kami talgang apat ang magkakasama... At my plano na ulit ang FAILURE para magrecord ng new EP.. Hot tracks... Soon... Batangas Hardcore flavor still... Check it out..

What made you decide to take this bold move? And shift into this genre which is the opposite of hardcore?

Still hardcore style.... Attitude... About the movement.. All in all... BATANGAS LOCAL ARTIST recognized... Old and new generation.... And for all next generation... Keep it tight...

You also have this side project 8foldpath, what’s the story behind that band?

Yeah... 8foldpath... Nabuo last 2008.. Na ang mga players ay galing sa ibat ibang magagaling na bnda natin dito sa Batangas... Na nagtagpo tagpo sa gitna.. Wayback UB times... Makabuo ng new innovation ng style ng music... From Jugment, Tellayouthska, Sophie of Color of d day.. But now we are still arranging the new line up... Aalis na kasi ang gitarista namin Udorp from ska.. So steady lang... Watch out for our new line up soon too....=)

Tell us about your music, you have a mixed tape out, did you wrote all the lyrics? What is it all about?

Naging influencce ko din Jay-Z, lalung lalu na sa movement... Rockafella, na inspire ako... at Mike Swift Konektado to the billboard... Pero all in all... Eksena talga ng Batangas ang naging influence ko... Mga banda natin dito na nakasama ko... Story behind all of them. Malaking impluwensya sakin nila, lalu ung panindigan sa music.. How real their music, how they represent it simula pangalan ng mga banda/artist, sa musika, sa mga paniniwala.. Gaano katotoo ang music nila... Batangas pride.. SOF, Tellayouthska, one4zero, iya, godswill, rhthym, soul, marlon skin46.

You collaborate with different artist on this mixtape. Who are they and what are their part on the record?

Yeah.... Dito sa mxtape na ito.. Nagsama sama ibat ibang artist ng Batangas na nagagaling sa ibat ibang genre. Kasama ko dito sina Rhthym, Marlon of marl46, John of one4zero, Cardinal Tank of SOF, Phoebe of Bloody Scarlette, Bogchick and Mel Christ, upcoming hiphop artist din natin dito sa batangas from Lemery and Sto Tomas, Ismael (owner ng LOD studio) Soul ng Project Kulture... Kasama ko din dito ang Choir ng Basilica Immaculate Conception... =)

Malaki ang part nila sa Mixtape. Sila ang magsisilbing ehemplo din para sa movement because this album talga ay para sa Since Day 1 Movement.. Ilan lang sila sa mga patunay na naniwala din at nagpakita din na posible mangyari ang mga gugusuhin natin mangyari...

Do you have plans of making a video or something?

This coming year lalabas ang first music vid ng 8foldpath (Biernes trese) directed by Gab Tojino. Madami pang upcoming vid para sa NSC Since Day 1 DVD ngayon taon din yan...=) Batangas.....

What do you think about the scene that we have here in Batangas right now and the next coming year? Please share your insights.

Tuloy tuloy na ang eksena nawala man ang tugtugan ng matagal na panahon pero hindi ito namatay... May independent music label na tau, my studio, madaming artist na nag lalabasan pa, sa music at sa mga arts sa mga merchandise. May spot tayo ngayon na naniniwala para sa event, at higit sa lahat nagkakatulung tulungan na ang kramihan dito sa Batangas.... Kapit bisig, Maniwala lang ang bawat isa lalu para sa Batangas at mangyayari ito.. Batangas stand up!!! Filipino rise up!!! Nangyayari na, mas magiingay pa lalo ang tiga Batangas...

You guys together with NSC have a lot of things going. Tell us more about the “Since Day One Movement”. What’s behind this?

Since Day 1 Movement, ay para talaga sa eksena natin dito sa Batangas. May direksyon may patutunguhan ang bawat artist, music and arts at mabigyan ng chance na marekognise ang lahat para sa lahat pa din ito. Hindi lang sa mga magbabanda para sa Batangas pa din ito. Nakita na at nalaman na ng iba ang movement na ito na nagsilbi sa aming libro. Kaya sa bawat pahina ay hakbang, kaya hakbang lang ng hakbang at mararating din ang pangarap na mayroon talga tayo dito sa Batangas. Mismong dito sA ating lugar ang pagasa at di na kailangang dumayo pa. Magsisilbing tulay pa tayo para sa kanila... Spread the word about d movement.... Nangyayari na, imulat lang lalo ang mga mata..=) Ang pagtutulungan talga ay susi din ng tagumpay ng lahat... Pantay pantay lang... Yah heard....

The Morning After is post-rock band from the city of Batangas. Started as a indie/power pop band way back 2002. As they explore different type of music from post-rock, shoegaze, indie, punk, and metal they were able to create this four track EP. Recorded and mixed at the comfort of their own room, everything here is D.I.Y. Thats why the band decided to give it away for free.

The Morning After hails from Batangas and formed in 2002. The band creates fantastic post-rock. The group consists of amazingly talented individuals Lorenzo Reyes, Emmanuel Panopio, Mark Nino Cordova and Mark Anthony Ascinas. In early 2002, they started out as an indie/power pop band and continuously explore the music from post-rock, shoegaze, indie, punk to metal. Until early June, they have created a stunning EP that made me sit up and take notice when I heard the tracks. I have to admit that "Through Emptiness I Rise" and "Laguerta" reminds me a lot of Explosion in the Sky and God is an Astronaut, these 2 songs blew my socks off the moment I heard them. "Chasing Lights"is catchy while "Memoirs of the Old House" stayed mellow in its great soundscape not to drown you to sleep. In other words, The Morning After's Chasing Lights EP was beautiful, it is filled with 4 great tunes that you wouldn't want to miss. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.

Now Forgiveness Will be Denied

I was asked by Sheng of Overtuneph if I can make a review of what happened on last Sunday’s Forgivenes Denied Reunion Show. So I said will I try to, because I’m quite busy with other stuff. Anyhow here it is.

I went to Trinoma to pick up and have a late lunch with my girlfriend. We’re supposed to get some tickets as well for the Dashboard Confessional show but the local area connection at Ticket World was failing so we decided to get it some other time. We picked a cab and head to Ten02, arrived a li’l late Legarda and Towards The End already finished their set.

Saw Felix at the gate and get the reunion show shirt I reserved. While I was talking to Felix, ByStorm was preparing for their set. So I get my camera and started to shoot. They pulled out a great set as the crowd started dancing and the venue starts to get filled.

Next band was The Beauty of Doubt I really love to see them play, they have this white cartolina posted on the stage with the names of the desaparicidos or victims of enforced disapearances. Paying a little tribute and make people aware of this incidents. They played some new songs from their newly released EP titled Just Matter. I recommend to check them out.

After TBOD, Demolition of False Progression hits the stage. First time to see this band play and they make the crowd going, a real treat for the crowd. Isvarah was next and throws another great performance. We are all getting sweaty as things heat up inside. Rush IxDx step the stage after Isvarah, they did a cover of G.I and the Idiots song “Broken Lineage”. Its really nice to see them play again. Play from Bulacan was really amazing to watch with all those stage diving and sing along. They play really fast hardcore. Staid was next to step the stage with full energy, straight edge, fast paced hardcore. You know what to expect from this guys.

Another band whose having their reunion show is Richard Collier with its original line up, been listening to this guys since Bid Time Return wayback then. They started their set with the song Somewhere in Time, then the old time favorite 02.14.09. Everybody was smiling and singing along. They also did a cover of Echo and the Bunnymen’s Killing moon.

After RC’s set I took a breather went outside grab some cola to chill, it was really hot inside. I wasn’t able to checked Nuclear Punishment’s performance. But heard they have a brutal set as well.

Next to set the stage was the pride of Batangas, SAUNA whose having a reunion show as well. They burn the house down as the crowd went wild. It was a killer set. I was at the pit, sing along and taking pictures. The whole place turns into a sauna literally, a free detox to everyone inside. According to Felix, one thing he regret about is for not being able to go on tour this band.

As the night slowly come to an end Forgiveness Denied took the stage. It was like several years ago since they last played. So you know what to expect. They open with the song Welcome to the Harsh Reality, it was from their demo released somewhere in 2001. And again crowd went APESHIT, they also did a cover of Harvest’s Epicure and Point of No Return’s Casa de Caboclo, which they cover eversince the band started.
We all thought that the show was over, until Ron of The Beauty of Doubt, announced that FEUD will be playing 3 songs. So everybody was like “Yeah!” This is a teaser for their upcoming reunion show as well this coming June 26 at the Pilipinas Fast Fest. They started with Direction, For the sake, and Unschooling the world. Everyone is yelling to play one more song ‘Lasenggo’. But instead they told the crowd to just come on their reunion show this June for the full set.

Everyone left the venue with the smile on their faces, wet shirts and memories of a great night of hardcore punk. And this proves that hardcore punk is here to stay.

Batangas Pride's Forgiveness Denied will be having a reunion show this May 23 at Ten02 bar in Quezon City.

Formed early 2001 by ex-members of various hardcore bands in Batangas City, Forgiveness Denied was born. They began covering stuffs from Another Victim, Harvest and Buried Alive. A 6 song independently released demo "Welcome To the Harsh Reality" was the product of their sweat and blood for over a year. Late 2002, after some line up changes, they again wrote songs for the second full length album, but due to some issues, that 9 new songs were never recorded, later FD was gone..

Formed in Massachusetts, Bane began as a side project between Aaron Dalbec and members of Converge. After contacting Aaron Bedard, a former drummer in local hardcore punk bands, the group entered the studio in December 1995. After recording a demo, Bane made their live debut in February 1996. The lineup saw the addition of bass player Pete Chilton and released a debut 7" single. In May 1997 Bane released Free to Think, Free to Be, another 7" single. Another guitarist, Zachary Jordan, was added to the group as a member of Converge returned to his top priority. In May 1998 another 7" single, Holding This Moment, was released and was followed by a tour with Saves the Day. In 1999, Bane signed to Equal Vision Records and released the band's debut full-length album, It All Comes Down to This. A national and international tour with Death by Stereo ensued. The group also toured with Good Riddance and Strike Anywhere. In 2001, Bane released Give Blood. They have toured throughout Europe as well as performing at various festivals, including Furnace Fest. The band returned in the spring of 2005 with The Note.

Its been quite some time since i posted some articles here, and my apologies to people whose been checking this site. Ive been busy over the last few months with my new job and personal stuff. I have several pending interviews with some of our local bands, and also a CD review from the latest ep of Walk Me home released under the label Radio Off Project. But I havent write something meaningful as of this moment. Again my sincere apologies.

Im also cooking something with my new band, if everything goes well as planned and if time permit us to play with our different and changing schedules. We are supposed to play last week at Cubao X, but again work schedules didn't allow us. And we all know it always sucks.

Please continue checking this site, I know we will all be busy within the next couple of weeks because of the holidays and everything. Hopefully we can update this site as soon as possible.
And if there is someone whose interested in helping me writing some articles, news or whatever that, I would gladly appreciate. I will give you rights and access to this site.

Today for our review corner we’re going to feature Batangas City’s newest pop punk outfit, “IYA” and their independently released debut album “The epic battle between goodlooks and money.” I somehow heard this band before, but I don’t really pay much attention to them since I don’t really listen to pop punk or “emo” bands nowadays, not that I don’t listen to them, but right now I’m more into the Indie, shoegaze and post rock kind of music. I still dig local music no matter how much they sound or whatever genre they’re into to help them in my own simple ways like this, I still buy some merchandise and stuff from them.

One time Pex (vocalist) send me a message at some networking site asking if we can collaborate, team up or work together, (unfortunately it didn’t push trough). I started to get aware of their brand of music, checked their myspace and listen to few samples. Then after a few more weeks, I saw these guys play at Kiko and LC’s post wedding celebration, I approached them and start to make friends with them. Hehe. Ger, the keyboardist and guitarist, I’ve known this guy since college. He handed me his ipod and ask to have a sneak peak of the songs they recorded. Too bad I missed their release party because of work. Anyhow Pex gave me a copy of their cd which I greatly appreciate. Immediately I noticed the quality of recording, Macoy of Earbender studio did a great job on this one. He gets the sound of early “The starting line” albums. Basically this means that the sound is on top quality.

In terms of music and song writing and building up the band, they’ve managed to pull those catchy lyrics and poppish melodies with their technical abilities musically. Songs are mostly based on relationships, girls and their crushes. Songs like Quick hello Pex talks about her crush with lines like “If I say hi there, would you feel special? I’m frozen half to death, imagining how things would be like”, also according to Pex “most of the songs are about desperate attempts for a decent relationship.” APT song (feat. Ton Diva and the APT Crew) is more of a friendship song. According to the band this song is about their rented apartment where they and their crew hang out most of the time. Third song is “Under the sleepsign” which reminds me of the song, “Best of Me” by the starting line. And this song is available for free downloads on their pure volume page. Keypad dance is the only slow song in this record, not sure why it’s called a keypad song. The sixth track was a tagalog song WBS263(the Maan song) is about Tam and some other girls Pex added. One song that I really like as well is the cover of Jim Brickman’s song, “The Gift” which reminds me of the Pop Goes Punk compilation. Other songs that I didn’t mention are Sleepless and Her and me. These guys are chick magnets. Haha. So if you’re a guy and you wonder how to get a girl, you better go and ask them, they definitely know the answer, Haha. Well, I just hope they expand more of their song writing capabilities not just write songs about girls or relationship.

About the tangibles, artwork, layout, and packaging, honestly I didn’t really like the layout of their CD. I told Pex that it looks like a seventh birthday invitation; I ask him what’s with the balloons, confetti and fireworks. He just laughed at me, he even told me that it looks gay but they wanted it that way. It represents how happy they are as individuals. So I said ok, that’s cool and I’m starting to like the cover now though.

They already passed a demo CD at NU 107, probably for the next couple of months you’ll certainly hear this guys on the radio. And I support these guys for the hard work that they put into this record. If you could only hear their stories, it’s really punk rock. I admire you guys for that, it just shows how serious this guys about playing and making their music. I hope you’ll remain true to the core.

Price of the CD is 250 Philippine Peso that’s direct. A little pricey but if you consider their effort it’s a pretty cool deal. For international buyer you can drop us a line on our shoutbox or you can contact the band directly on their myspace.
